Weekly Objective: I will be able to analyze the Bill of Rights and connect them to everyday situations.
Monday: Bill of Rights
-Activity/Assignment: Read the Article titled “The Bill of Rights” there is a PDF attachment of it at the bottom. As you are reading scan for unfamiliar words and take notes of the main ideas for each section. Think about the following questions as you are taking notes:
- What is the Bill of Rights?
-Why was the Bill of Rights created?
- What does each amendment state?
Tuesday: Real Life Scenarios
-Activity/Assignment: Read the following 3 scenarios and decide which amendment from the Bill of Rights would protect the people in that case/ situation. (Use the article which lists the amendments to make it easier.)
Example: Sally thinks Betty has stolen her bracelet. She wants the police to go to Betty’s house and look around to see if her bracelet is there.
Answer: Amendment 4 would protect Betty in this situation because the fourth amendment requires the government to have a warrant that is issued by a judge and is based on probable cause.
1) The army base in your town is over-crowded. The town council passed a law that anyone with an extra bedroom must house a soldier from the base.
2) The city is closing the local basketball courts to make way for a parking lot. Dan and his friends want to march to city hall to present a petition to the mayor to keep the courts.
3) Bob Williams has been accused of stealing a computer. He has been in jail for three years waiting for his trial to begin.
Wednesday & Thursday: Presentations
-Activity/Assignment: Using google slides or PowerPoint create a presentation that includes the following:
Slide 1: Title page with student and teacher name
Slide 2: Explain what the Bill of Rights are and why are they important.
Slide 3: Explain what would happen if there was no Bill of Rights.
Slide 4: Example of how the Bill of Rights protects us in our daily life. Choose one of the amendments from the Bill of Rights and create a scenario in which the people are protected by that amendment. (Just like your assignment from Tuesday, but now it is your turn to come up with your own scenario)
Slide 5: Write a short summary reflecting on what you learned this week.
